A Global City and the Independents Biennial

This event is part of the A Global City: connections, reflections and exceptions programme. Through a series of events, the Museum of Liverpool is looking to explore what makes Liverpool a ‘global city’ and how its history and culture have been shaped by, and continue to influence, the world around it. Hosted by Kazem Ashourzadeh (Artist and Director of Mr Boy Cookery School CIC), Advocate (Mental Health and Human Rights activist) and Michelle Wren (Artist and Human Rights Activist), we will explore the idea of solidarity, the language of immigration and Liverpool as a City of Sanctuary.

The event will feature two artworks, ‘Put Your Feet In My Shoes’ and ‘My Dream Is A World Without Hatred’ that share the experiences of local people in Liverpool who are seeking asylum, followed by a talk and Q&A from the producers.

After the panel discussion, please join us for a hands-on workshop to make fabric pieces, which take inspiration from the idea of sanctuary. After the workshop, the fabric pieces will be joined together to create a banner. The words and stories shared during the workshop will also be included in an upcoming zine created by Kazem, Advocate and Michelle.

The Independents Biennial

The Independents Biennial has been showcasing the work of grassroots artists since 1999 and has been known by various names including Tracey, Biennial Fringe and Liverpool Independents. It is managed by Art in Liverpool but programmed at venues and locations across the city-region by artists, artist groups, art studios and artist networks. The artist-led festival, which runs concurrently to Liverpool Biennial, is created to showcase the vibrant art and art scene of the city-region.

The Museum of Liverpool reflects the city’s global significance through its unique geography, history and culture. Visitors can explore how the port, its people, their creative and sporting history have shaped the city.

The museum opened on 19 July 2011 in a purpose-built landmark building on Liverpool’s famous waterfront.
