‘Put Your Feet In My Shoes’ is an immersive installation that invites audiences to join self-assured protagonist Marco Polo on his perilous journey across the Mediterranean to seek sanctuary in Europe. Through Kazems gift for storytelling and Michelle’s distinct art aesthetic this colourful, cartoon-like, funny and painfully honest approach will sweep you off your feet and into the author’s shoes, giving new vantage points to address prevailing narratives about people seeking asylum.
Autobiographical to Kazems own journey to Europe the work blends traditional analogue techniques with digital technologies including live video, green screen, animation, AR, projection mapping, puppetry, set building and prop making – with poetic audio and an artistic soundtrack created by Rob Wingfield.
Michelle Wren is a socially engaged artist with a multidisciplinary activist art practice that has gained her multiple large-scale public art commissions for organisations like Common Wealth Theatre; Slovenia’s National Puppet Theatre (LGL), Glastonbury Festival and Brandalism Collective. Kazem Ashourzadeh is a Persian poet and chef who has made art installations at At-Tension festival and developed work screened at Venice Biennale. The artists have been collaborating for over 8 years.
The piece draws on inspiration from the Zine ‘My Dream Is A World Without Hatred’ that the artists co-produced with a group of people seeking asylum, following the Race Riots in the summer of 2024. As well as being a feature of the Independents Biennial programme this summer, Put Your Feet in My Shoes will be screened in community spaces in areas of Liverpool where people seeking asylum have experienced racism. Look out for special events happening alongside the installation during August and an event the artists are hosting at Liverpool Museum on the 16th August
