We’re going to be doing a lot of blogging. A lot. Until 6th June 2021, 4x artist hosts (Elizabaeth Challinor, Harriet Burns, Jo Mary Watson & Matt Retallick) will be working in residence [sic. from home] recording the developing work of 19 artists.

The artists they’re documenting will be sharing their own development on their dedicated online spaces HERE.

And, because we want to be open with everyone throughout, you can get involved in all of our work throughout on Google Drive.

About

20 March – 6 June 2021

Independents Biennial 2021 is in these pages.

These pages are an exhibition of the best of the programme; those artists we chose to commission in 2020, before we got postponed to March ‘21; and the ones that embody the spirit of independent creativity across the region.

In an exquisitely selfish way, this publication is a dream come true for me, printing a festival without dates, doors or disguising ideas behind the illusion of scale.
Everything on this website stands up for itself as an idea, and an artwork, with nothing other than its bare bones, be that words, stories, provocations or images.

I hope you enjoy it, and join us in what will probably become a fairly physical mess.

There’s been a lot of talk about trying to be in spaces. That’s not going to happen. Not because it’s not legal; not because it’s not safe; because artists aren’t machines, and their work has been created to work on a page, not a wall, this time around.

Follow the festival programme with this site as your hub. Join the conversation, share your thoughts, or just observe.

Happy reading.
