Axisweb have supported the development of new spaces as part of Independents Biennial 2021. In early 2020 they secured the lease of the former M&S in Bootle, and despite us being unable to open the festival as planned in July 2020, or hosting audiences indoors so far in 2021, the former M&S space has given artists space to develop new work, away from their homes, and away from the noise of the city centre.

We hope to continue working with Axisweb, and this venue and see where it leads, but crucially, it will remain a core part of this year’s programme, whether it opens it doors or not. Liverpool needs a production space on this scale, and we’ve had the opportunity to test that out.
