NEW RELIGIOUS ART
Neal Brown was curator of ‘To the Glory of God: New Religious Art,’ presented at St Peter’s Church as part of the 2002 Liverpool Biennial.
After deciding it needed erotic and religious improvement, Brown has rewritten Georges Bataille’s pornographic novella ‘Story of the Eye.’ In his new version, Brown has replaced Bataille’s priest and other characters with some of his favourite artists and personages from the contemporary art world. He has also attended to Susan Sontag’s essay ‘The Pornographic Imagination’ in which Sontag discusses Bataille’s work partly in the context of religion.
Works will also include a photograph of the artist at prayer.
