Constructed images from film and television memories.
The work suspends disbelief, as the images could be documentary portraits rather than constructed scenes. The image is lifted from a forgotten narrative, then the process begins with this fragment of memory taken either directly from a film, a place that seems filmic, or the person acting in the reconstruction. Then the original fragment and the constructed image start to merge before the photograph has been taken. The resulting photographs are a weave of recreated images from memory that everyone shares known as semantic memory, with one that is personal known as episodic.
We each wear an array of masks that suit the different aspects of our lives. We learn to do this not just from reality but also from the image. There is a collective unconcious of images that we have absorbed through time, which is often the reason that we sometimes experience the sensation of a situation feeling cinematic. The work attempts to recreate this sensation for the subject and the viewer.
