Independents Biennial 2020 was postponed to March 2021. If you want to get involved as an artist, collective, studio or gallery we want to know what you’ve got planned.
Independents Biennial Associates Programme is a new way of presenting the work of the region, enabling more autonomy and ownership of artist work, and centring the focus on the identity of independent spaces. All submissions will need to be self-led, but for artists with projects ready to go, we can try to match you to spaces, and help with presentation and documentation of your work. There is no formal process to submit, and no formal deadline yet, but we’ll update this page once we’ve got catalogue deadline’s in place.
For Artists
Independents Biennial has already announced its commissioned artists for 2021 (find out more here) but we have been overwhelmed by the response of artists from all over the North West in 2020 asking how to connect their work to the programme. This Open Call aims to clarify how to engage with the programme, and how to submit projects, events and exhibitions.
Art in Liverpool C.I.C. will be supporting all successful submissions to the Associates Programme with venue sourcing, marketing and documentation of their work, as well as ensuring artists have access to programme resources and professional development resources as the commissioned artists.
Artists at every stage of their career are encouraged to apply, including those still in education, whether you’ve exhibited before or not. Independents Biennial is a space to show the best artists working in the region, as well as an opportunity for new talent.
For Organisations
Independents Biennial 2020 was planning to work with Merseyside’s largest galleries, as well as its smallest. In 2021 we hope to continue with some of that programme but our focus is on supporting independent spaces.
The Associate Programme will work with venues, and visual art organisations from around Merseyside to support their own programmes from 20th March – 6th June 2021. If you need artists to fill exhibition spaces, or have ideal venues for a public programme of talks and screenings, please just get in touch.
For studios and galleries with plans for March – June, the offer is straightforward, we’ll ensure your programme is publicised and will support with audience plans, including audience safety, within our programme dates. Your programmes will be included in our catalogue, and if selected, we’ll work in collaboration with you to develop new ways of documenting and sharing your work in 2021.
All art studios and galleries in Merseyside are eligible, no matter their size or how long they have existed. Independents Biennial is a representation of the current state of affairs in our arts scene, and we can’t do that without all shapes and sizes of space

Send any enquiries to patrick@artinliverpool.com
We’re not working through December 2020, so we’ll get back to any enquiries sent in then in January. Until then, have a wonderful Christmas, and a 2021 that surpasses 2020.
