M°A°I°S 4: The Good and The Bad

Curated By: Nina+Torsten Roemer and Julian Gillespie
Co-ordinated in Liverpool by: Julian Gillespie
Co-ordinated in Berlin by: Nina+Torsten Roemer
Supported by Basement

M°A°I°S is an ongoing arts project co-ordinated by Nina+Torsten Roemer. M°A°I°S stands for Malerei (German for Painting), Aktion (German for Performance), Installation (German for Installation), and Skulptur (German for Sculpture. So in England this project might be called P.P.I.S.!

M°A°I°S has its roots in Cologne a city that is twinned with Liverpool. As the projects title suggests, artists involved in M°A°I°S work in all the different mediums currently employed by contemporary artists. The style and nature of the work is diverse, the common link being that all artists are young, have met or know Nina+Torsten Roemer and are dealing with ideas in a contemporary context.

To date M°A°I°S has presented 3 major exhibitions; the first in Cologne in May 2000 and more recently in Berlin in 2001 and 2002 where Nina+Torsten are now based. Having them visited and exhibited in Liverpool as part of the ‘Eight Days A Week’ project in 2000 linking Liverpool and Cologne, Nina+Torsten suggested we bring M°A°I°S to Liverpool.

Since this visit they have been working together with Liverpool based M°A°I°S artist Julian Gillespie to bring the project to Liverpool. In the spirit of the project Julian Gillespie has invited 17 UK based artists to join the project for the first time and so the project grows each time.

‘M°A°I°S 4: The Good and The Bad’ will see approximately 50 artists from more than 15 different countries exhibit in an old warehouse in Liverpool’s Duke Street area. After the Biennial the two buildings used for the exhibition are to be redeveloped for residential and leisure use as part of the ongoing regeneration in the area.
