Re-Imagining Hilbre
Luciana Hermida
Luciana Hermida is a mixed media artist and postgraduate student of MA Art in Science at Liverpool John Moores University, exploring human connection with nature. For ‘Drawing Out Hilbre’, Luciana has involved the local community through art-science workshops where people had the opportunity to explore the geomorphology of the Hilbre archipelago through art, uncovering what is often overlooked. These activities and the outcomes inform the deep mapping of the island, alongside the creation of mixed media legacy artworks to be exhibited on Hilbre’s Buoysmaster’s workshop from 17th June 2025 until the 1st of July 2025.
The artist will be there on the following selected days
Tuesday 17th of June from 10.30am – 12pm
Wednesday 18th of June from 10.30am – 2pm
Friday 20th of June from 10.30 – 12pm
Saturday 21st of June 11.30 – 4.30pm (staying over tide on the island)
Saturday 28th of June 10 – 6pm
Tuesday 1st of July 10.30am – 1pm

About Hilbre Island:
This project aims to secure a sustainable future for a sensitive heritage and ecological asset. The restoration of the site’s buildings, four of which are listed as Grade II, will establish a centre dedicated to the study of Art, Science, and Sustainability. This initiative will enhance ongoing efforts to monitor migratory birds and foster a deeper connection with the local community through educational programming.
In partnership with Independents Biennial Liverpool, we are excited to launch our inaugural project, “Drawing Out Hilbre Archipelago.” This ambitious festival will feature artist residencies, workshops, exhibitions, and performances that delve into key themes, including:
-
Ecological Interconnections: Examining the relationships between different species and their habitats.
-
Cultural Heritage and Community Narratives: Celebrating the history and stories that define Hilbre and its surrounding communities.
-
Sustainability and Self-Sufficiency: Emphasizing practices that promote ecological balance and resourcefulness.
-
Time and Tides: Investigating the impact of changing tides on the island and its ecosystems.
-
Engagement with Nature: Fostering outdoor participation and artistic interaction with the island’s natural environment.
Together, these efforts aim to create a vibrant hub for learning and connection within the unique context of Hilbre.
