An Inquest Concerning Teeth: Scouse and Still-Life Drawing
is a still-life drawing class that takes a slower approach to the act of creating and the act of eating. We intend to serve Scouse using lamb from a local halal butcher to honor the diversity of the local community, with vegetables from small businesses in the area to support the local community, and to share Liverpool’s cultural dish with the city’s visitors. Sharing a bowl of Scouse with our participants allows us to discuss our maritime connection, leftovers, class, and the different iterations of the dish, family to family, as well as the various iterations of ‘stew’, culture to culture. This workshop is open to artists of all abilities.

“Mic is a self-taught Liverpool-based artist with a background in English Literature. Whilst her passion for art has been life-long, graduating from her English degree in 2023 was the catalyst to her now committed painting practice. Through taking oil painting workshops and life-drawing classes led by local artists, she has developed a style that resembles mundanity through a nostalgic and romantic lens. The themes in her work derive from navigating the disorienting early graduate years; her paintings reflect the transition from girlhood to womanhood where making art has become an antidote to the uncertainty of this liminal time.
Still life is a subject she is naturally intrigued by, finding that the everyday objects we leave scattered around places we reside in reveal a layer of humanness that is endearing, and sheds light on one’s identity and psyche.”

About The Royal Standard:
More than just space, TRS is a community that makes a career as an artist in Liverpool a viable and accessible option through access to a support network and development opportunities through our local and national networks.
We aim to support outstanding emerging and mid-career artists by providing the highest quality, affordable studio spaces within a supportive community. Our programme includes public exhibitions, residencies, exchanges, critiques, research, events, training and community activities. We currently support over 40 artists through our studio membership and residency scheme. Our mission is to support artists to create sustainable and viable careers in the North West.
Founded in 2006 in a small pub in Dingle, The Royal Standard originally emerged from the need for a middle ground in Liverpool — somewhere in between smaller DIY grassroots arts incentives and larger institutions. In 2008, The Royal Standard undertook an ambitious relocation and expansion into a larger industrial space on the Northern periphery of the City Centre to a site on Vauxhall Road, relaunching to acclaim for the Liverpool Biennial 2008, which coincided with the city’s year as European Capital of Culture. Since then, we have thrived on account of the hard work of our team and local artists, and are now situated in our third, most ambitious location in the Baltic Triangle. Over the years, we have delivered a multitude of exhibitions and events spanning 322 days open to the public, working with 429 different artists and creatives, and welcoming over 10,000 audience members through our doors.
