Clare Chinnery

‘My recent works reflect my interest in historical 17th-century Vanitas paintings. I have been studying the symbolism and chiaroscuro techniques of the Old Masters, interpreting and translating historical images into my own still-life pieces through expressive colour and spontaneous mark-making.

My most recent works are inspired specifically by Memento Mori-style still lifes, using their complex, overladen, and sumptuous compositions to explore the fleeting nature and transience of life.

Through a filter of contemporary cultural references—including film, literature, and music—I reimagine these classical themes in a way that feels raw, expressive, and unmistakably modern.’

Clare Chinnery is an artist living and working in Wallasey. Her abstract style is currently concerned with capturing light, shape, and form, taking inspiration from Dutch Vanitas still lifes.

Clare studied Fine Art Painting at Liverpool John Moores University, where she developed her abstract style, concentrating mainly on abstract landscapes. Clare’s work has been exhibited worldwide, with paintings in collections across China, the USA, New Zealand, and the UK. Her recent projects include a commissioned album cover for the Wirral band The Dream Machine and a selections in the Royal Cambrian Academy Open Exhibition and the Discerning Eye Exhibition in London.

For this exhibition, Clare continues to develop her exploration of still life, layering historical influences with contemporary cultural narratives to create visually rich and thought-provoking compositions.
