The Artists:
Becky Bryson
Becky Bryson is a multidisciplinary artist with over 20 years’ experience working nationally and internationally. She holds a First-Class BA in Fine Art and works under the name Flotsam Fables.
Her practice explores mythology, folklore, and the natural world through intricate sculptures and dioramas made from found and reclaimed materials – often gathered along the Wirral shoreline. These pieces inhabit a liminal world where discarded objects are transformed into poetic vessels of story and meaning.
Drawing on the rhythms of tide and time, Becky’s work invites reflection on impermanence, resilience, and the enchantment hidden in everyday fragments. Flotsam Fables celebrates transformation and connection—between self, nature, memory, and the overlooked.
Ling Warlow
Hoylake based visual artist Ling Warlow celebrates the natural world through paper botany, creating 3D sculptures of British Wildflowers. Inspired by the natural shapes, forms and colours of British hedgerow and wayside plants and trees, she creates her sculptures using wood, wire and paper, often colouring paper using natural dyes taken from plant and vegetable matter, sometimes found and foraged. The resultant colours’ occasional fugitive nature adds a temporal dimension to the work, flowers which may fade and change over time. Ling’s principal aim is to inspire viewers to look closely at the humble wonders of nature, recognising that “weeds” are wildflowers and encouraging an emotional connection to both nature and place.
Tamasine Siebold
I am inspired by both nature and urban entropy, beauty in decay. I wish to create a community dialogue to share stories, emotions, perspectives and to approach work in a ‘Mindful and contemplative’ way. As a weaver I have been using a Saori loom, Brinkley, 3D printed Rigid Heddle and DIY looms. I weave not only for expanding my own intuitive weaving practise but also to open intuitive weaving to groups within the community. I do this by enabling people of all abilities to work with looms to create collective cloth and mindful weaved pieces. I have been using embroidery in a similar way, using old/inherited / preloved domestic linen. Within my practise I try to be mindful of sustainability and resource efficiency, using pre loved yarns/fabrics, found objects and inherited vintage objects/textiles. The Interplay of materials and emotions and the often unspoken burden of consolidating the inheritance of the many possessions of lost loved ones. Informing my curiosity of the emotional weight of inanimate objects and adding to the intuitive way of creating and thinking. Within my performative work i have been exploring the feminine archetypes. Embodying mythology, personal experience and symbolic interpretation, using costume, movement, audience interaction and voice.
About Hilbre Island:
This project aims to secure a sustainable future for a sensitive heritage and ecological asset. The restoration of the site’s buildings, four of which are listed as Grade II, will establish a centre dedicated to the study of Art, Science, and Sustainability. This initiative will enhance ongoing efforts to monitor migratory birds and foster a deeper connection with the local community through educational programming.
In partnership with Independents Biennial Liverpool, we are excited to launch our inaugural project, “Drawing Out Hilbre Archipelago.” This ambitious festival will feature artist residencies, workshops, exhibitions, and performances that delve into key themes, including:
-
Ecological Interconnections: Examining the relationships between different species and their habitats.
-
Cultural Heritage and Community Narratives: Celebrating the history and stories that define Hilbre and its surrounding communities.
-
Sustainability and Self-Sufficiency: Emphasizing practices that promote ecological balance and resourcefulness.
-
Time and Tides: Investigating the impact of changing tides on the island and its ecosystems.
-
Engagement with Nature: Fostering outdoor participation and artistic interaction with the island’s natural environment.
Together, these efforts aim to create a vibrant hub for learning and connection within the unique context of Hilbre.
