Basement is an artist led project by Susan Leask and Margaretha Schöning staging residencies and exhibitions since 1995.

Outside the white cube, basement invites artists to create site related installations challenging the notion of the whitewashed environment that still predominates the housing of contemporary art.

In an atmosphere of interchange and dialogue over a two-week residency period the exploration and sharing of ideas is of particular importance to basement as each artist creates their installation.

For basement IX, as part of the Liverpool biennial Independent, Susan Leask and Margaretha Schöning, Liverpool, UK will work alongside Jyotee from Mumbai, India and Alexei Kostroma from St Petersburg, Russia.

Residency dates: 15 September – 29 September 2002

Exhibition dates: 30 October – 13 October 2002

Basement has also supported the MAIS project and a section of their building will house part of the MAIS exhibition.
