Chris Borkowski is a digital media maker living in Brooklyn NY. He received his BA in digital arts / media study (1997) from the University at Buffalo. From 1997 to 2001 he worked as Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center’s technical director. From 2001 to 2003, he taught courses in New Media and Integrated Sound Image Design at the University at Buffalo Department of Media Study where he was also their New Media Lab Technician. Currently he is employed at the Guggenheim Museum in NYC as their Intranet Portal Developer.
During his four years as Hallwalls’ technical director Chris collaborated and provided technical support for the Artist in Residency Program. This program supported the creation of visual and media art for nationally and internationally recognized artists. He has collaborated and provided technical support for such artists as Kia Kaljo (Estonia), Hilla LuLu Lin (Israel), Johnna MacArthur (NY, NY), Charles Goldman (NY, NY), and Cecila Vicuna (NY,NY) among others. In 2000 he participated in a multi gallery and web site media project called Democracy -The Last Campaign with San Francisco Based media artist Jon Winet and Margaret Crane (http://dtlc.walkerart.org).
Video has been the main focus of his own work. His earlier videos used appropriated and found footage and were multi-layered visually and ideologically with the intent of constructing a paradigm of social criticism. The earlier work explored themes based on the spectacle created by a media enriched culture. More recently his work has moved away from using appropriation as a means of cultural reflection and towards videos that reley on photographic composition as a means of expression. His latest work is more concerned with creating visually simplified and Spartan pieces. Thematically the work ranges from autobiographical video shorts to socio-political work such as the recently completed interactive DVD-ROM Composite City.
Chris’ work has been exhibited nationally at a variety of venues from media festivals to art galleries to universities. These venues including: E-Poetry Festival, the Williamsberg/Brooklyn Film Festival, THAW, gale gates gallery, SmackMellon, Tribeca Open Studio Tour, Visual Studies Workshop, Carnegie Arts Center, Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, Squeaky Wheel, University of Buffalo, Columbia University, and Colgate University.
Chris has performed in various electronic music and improvisational festivals combining both digital video and audio into real-time hybrid media performances. He has shared the stage or the line up with artist such as Pauline Oliveros, DJ, Spooky, Tony Conrad, Freight Elevator Quartet, B. Flieshman, Chris Coleman (Finder), Aaron Miller and numerous other New York State based musicians.
