Jean Maskell recalls and honours shipyard workers, their families and some of the great ships made in Birkenhead in the last century in her multidisciplinary exhibition of ceramics, art and history. Her abstract ceramics embrace the brutalist reality of heavy industrial work; the grace of ships that the shipbuilders could only dream of sailing on, and their pride in producing some of the world’s greatest vessels.

She will also be launching her new art book of short stories and poetry, offering a glimpse into work and family life in a shipyard town. As a riveter’s daughter, Jean’s work is inspired by her Birkonian heritage and the experiences of family members and stories passed down.

Open 10am-5pm 14th and 15th June
Then 1:30pm to 5pm Tue to Sat until 28th June

About Rathbone Studio:

The Rathbone Studio is a gallery and exhibition space. On display are hand crafted sculptural ceramics that emphasize the qualities of clay, soft tactile forms. Works by ceramic sculptor Janet Holmes. Original work that is unique, from sculptural pottery to hand carved dishes for that special gift. Commissions welcome. Pottery workshops for all abilities and taster session on the potters wheel.
