Independents Biennial 2025 is shaping up to be our most ambitious programme yet, with a bold vision and an exciting lineup of artists, exhibitions, and events. To bring it all to life, we’re looking for enthusiastic Event & Visitor Engagement Volunteers to join us from March to September 2025.
This role requires flexibility, as events and engagement activities will take place at different times and locations throughout the programme.
As an Event & Visitor Engagement Volunteer, you’ll play a vital role in connecting audiences with the festival through interactive experiences, Facilitating events, and media engagement. Whether assisting at workshops, capturing event highlights, or supporting public events, you’ll help shape the festival’s connection with the public.

Your Role & Responsibilities
As an Event & Visitor Engagement Volunteer, you may be involved in one or more of the following areas:
- Event Facilitation Assistant – Support workshops, talks, zine events, and interactive sessions by assisting artist facilitators, preparing materials, and guiding participants. Ideal for volunteers interested in outreach and audience engagement.
- Social Media/Communications Assistant – Capture event highlights, share updates, and engage online audiences through social media platforms and photography. May also assist in press and marketing efforts.
- Event Support Volunteer – Provide hands-on assistance for events, including setup, audience engagement, and supporting artists or speakers. May involve front-of-house duties such as welcoming guests, guiding attendees, and ensuring a smooth event flow.
- Visitor experience– collect visitor insights through surveys and engagement, helping to improve future events. Ensure visitors follow space guidelines and have a positive experience.
This role is ideal for those who are interested in audience research and public engagement.

Training & Support
All volunteers will receive a full induction and role-specific training, including:
- Public engagement and visitor interaction
- Workshop and event facilitation skills
- Social media and content creation guidance
- General safeguarding and health & safety training
- Personalised training based on your specific responsibilities
Ongoing support and supervision will be provided by senior staff throughout the festival.
