Angela Presnail
"Handle With Care" 5 cardboard bow sculptures with drawings and text
Angela Presnail is currently on the M.A. Fine Art programme at UCLAN. Her exhibition is concerned with revealing that the social ideals we hold about beauty and self identity are mere simulcra. It is not that we are not good enough, but the signs we are holding up to each other are unattainable.
The fashion industry in particular offers a kaleidoscopical array of signs and symbols with which to construct our appearance and articulate our identity. Increasingly, fashion brands rely on packaging and presentation rather than the product itself. Presentation is in danger of becoming everything. In creating the people boxes Presnail became concerned with the implied treatment of people as objects. The exhibition considers identity as something that you shop for that is mirrored in the continual acquisition of new garments. Are we the never completed sum of our identifications. The readymade texts contribute their own value to the compositions and direct attention to a central thought or theme.
